Ivan Savvidi: «If within 10 years growth rates remain the same, number of the Greek Diaspora will exceed the population of Greece»
Leaders of Pontic associations of 10 countries discussed perspectives of the development of cooperation between federations on 16-18th of January in Frankfurt.
An organizer of the meeting was the Federation of Pontic Societies of Europe headed by Ilias Mavridis.
The participants to the meeting held discussed urgent issues of the Pontic Hellenism, and planned out Second World Summit of the Pontic young people and admitted the necessity of carrying a series of scientific research aimed at analyze sociological features of a modern Pontic man and holding scientific conference upon the theme «genocide of Pontic Greeks and Christians of East».
Representatives of all Pontic federations, who took part in the meeting, agreed that it is necessary to renew and strengthen organizational set-up of the Pontic movement.
Russian Greek Diaspora, which accounts for these days more than 100 thousands Greeks, was represented by Ivan Savvidi, president of the Federal National-cultural Autonomy of Greeks in Russia. He mentioned in his report growing role of the Diaspora in recovery of political and economic situation in Greece and the necessity of close cooperation between Pontic Federations of Different countries aimed at search of an Idea of national Unity.
Some key points of Ivan Savvidi’s reeport:
«The Greek nation is unique. It is not only the population of Greece, but also multimillion Greek Diaspora, living out of the bounds of their historical motherland. We are different. We live in countries with different social, political and economic situations; we can have different outlook and world perception. That is why problem of unity and national identity for us, Greeks, and especially for Pontic Hellenes is essential.
In my opinion it is Greek nation who posses special immunity against immorality and inspirituality that grasp the world, and Europe in particular. If we, Greeks, don’t take measures aimed at strengthening or reanimation of the Christian consciousness, our place will be taken by somebody else. Look, today on the back of tragic events in France European politicians and Mass Media began to speak about islamisation of Europe, about need for changes in European paradigm, about inter-confessional issues in European society. You must admit that it is hard to define European identity. We can’t preserve aloofness from these processes.
Today geographical boundaries are blurred, so spiritual part of the world community should become worldwide. I think that we have all conditions and possibilities to become initiators of the creation of the Worldwide Christian space.
Certainly, both achievement of our goals, and our current work aimed at promotion of Christian values, preserving traditions, language, and cultural heritage of the Greek Nation are impossible without close partnership between Pontic federations of different countries. We are all involved in common cause, that is why joint projects, conferences, events, involving Parliament Of the Greek Republic in process, should boost our effectiveness. And, of course, we understand that there are certain problems in every Federation. Thus Federations of the Former Soviet Countries can’t leave unattended distressful situation of our compatriots of South- East of Ukraine or the fate and fortunes of thousands of Greek repatriates of the Former Soviet Union, who have lost their pensions, their bread and butter. That is why it is so important to understand how we can unite our interests, find strength and ways of common solving of all emergent problems.
Economic crisis, political instability, unemployment intensify emigrational flow. In search of better life young people leave Greece- the most educated and perspective part of our nation. If this tendency remains the same, number of Greek Diaspora will exceed the population of Greece. And, as I have already mentioned in the very beginning, we can and we have to take on a role of consolidator, being responsible for mobilization of the most qualitative forces of the Diaspora, and consequently facilitating an integration of this active part of the Greek nation into historical problem solving. »
